Ma‘ema‘e (meaning “pure” in Hawaiian) Elementary School is located near the base of
Nu‘uanu Valley. Founded in the late 1800's, the school has grown from a simple three-building facility to its present design with seven buildings. In 2021, Maʻemaʻe was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School.
Ma‘ema‘e School is committed to building a future of unlimited possibilities for all
students. The vision of our school is “Learning is Forever”. It is our philosophy that all children at
Ma‘ema‘e will develop to their fullest potential to become lifelong learners and positive
contributors to our society. We believe that children learn best by being actively engaged in
meaningful learning experiences within a safe environment, by learning new concepts built
upon their prior knowledge and experiences, and by working together toward common goals
within the school community.
Our PTSA is an enthusiastic supporter of Ma‘ema‘e School and provides opportunities to
involve all members of the Ma‘ema‘e ‘Ohana in activities such as fundraisers, Campus
Beautification, STEAM Night, Halloween Parade, Fright Night, Movie Night, Dolphin
Dash/Fitness Day, Literacy Week, and May Day/Song Fest. Family Night is the largest annual
fundraising event held in May that brings students, faculty, and parents together. Our PTSA’s
overall parent and community participation and support of these activities are a significant
factor in the success of the school. As a school, we are committed to providing a quality
educational environment that will ensure the academic, emotional, social, and physical growth
of every child. Opportunities for student participation in extracurricular activities were
postponed due to the COVID pandemic but are resuming as we return to normalcy. Some of
these activities include JPOs, Student Council, field trips, intramural sports, Glee Club, Media Club, and track. Parents, teachers, students, and the community value the dignity and worth of each individual.

School Song
When the sun shines in the valley, O’er our school so cool and green,
underneath the shady monkeypod, happy children work and play.
In our hearts there’ll always be,
thoughts of dear old Maʻemaʻe.
Picturesque you’ll always be,
a school so very dear to me.
Picturesque you’ll always be,
a school so very dear to me.
Loyal to our banner gay, green and yellow proudly wave.
Always forward, never backward, lead us each and every day.
In our hearts there’ll always be,
thoughts of dear old Maʻemaʻe.
Picturesque you’ll always be,
a school so very dear to me.
Picturesque you’ll always be,
a school so very dear to me.

He inoa no Maʻemaʻe
Konahuanui is majestic.
There is enjoyment in the area of Kou.
ʻĀlewa stands in the heaven.
The view from Kupanihi is splendid.
We are grateful.
The Waolani Stream is pleasing.
The Puahiohio wind cools.
The Hāʻao rain blesses.
Maʻemaʻe is shaded by the monkeypod tree.
We are thankful.
The proud children of Niolopa and Puʻunui.
We learn.
We play.
We strive for the summit.
Love... for the land here.
Love... to those who came before
Love... to those who surround us now.
